Stuff we take for granted, should make us thankful

Last night we lost power. Normally when we lose power it comes on rather quickly, but this time it lasted around 19-20 hrs. James and I had to sleep in the cold with no heat, but we were thankful that our uncle had a generator hooked up to his house and it was keeping the house warm. It was nice to be able to come over this morning and have it be warm, but eventually it was just getting to cold and he had to get a kerosene heater and turn on to warm up the house.

It's hard to realize that we take things for granted. We take our electricity, water, and heat as if we should never have a problem. Yes we have to pay for those things, but sometimes things happen that no one knows about and it drives you crazy because it's an inconvenience not to have our morning shower or a fresh pot of coffee. Even to be able to flush the toilet is a big deal when you can't use. We get frustrated when the person who is in charge of the electric just doesn't fix it. I wonder how that person feels knowing that a town is relying on them to get it fix as soon as possible. James' aunt or uncle made a good point this morning. Living in a bigger city when the power goes out you can call the power company and they can give an idea on how long it's going to take and what's wrong. Living here in the village everyone knows who that person is and want's to know why they don't have an answer right away.

Today as I was sitting in the "dark" (we had light since the generator was hooked up) I got to thinking how people survived living this way before we had electricity or even running water. As I was talking to James' aunt she made a good point. People who don't have any of that know what to expect in order to survive this. We had know idea that we were going to have the power go out, so we couldn't set aside any water for us to use. We were all taken aback from this. We complain because it's "messing" up are routine. We should be thankful that we have people in our world and have the knowledge to be able to figure out what is wrong.

Our problem last night into today was that a power line snapped under the runway and they couldn't really do anything about it until they had daylight to work with. With all that said. I am thankful for having our power back, so now we can do laundry, take showers, wash our hands, flush the toilet, and whatever else we use the power for.
